Exhibition for "A Night to Remember"

Exhibit Item 1: News Clipping from Petersburg, Virginia





This News Clipping is an article in The Progress Index of Petersburg, Virginia on the date of June 12, 1967. I would like to display this news clip because it was published on the exact day that the trial happened. This newspaper is the first clipping that the state of Virginia and the country of the United States saw, that would change their laws and lives forever. This article allowed everyone to know what the Loving's were trialled with, and how unfair and unconstitutional it was for Virginia to ban this marriage. This newspaper is the real publication of the law, for somebody to be able to marry whoever they would like.

Exhibit Item 2: Real Picture of Mr. and Mrs. Loving's sitting in an interview room.

This is a real image taken shortly after the Loving's won their case. They went into a room with all kinds of reporters and were questioned. They were asked questions similar to, "Can you believe you just won that case?", "Do you know that you have changed interracial marriage from now on?", "How does it feel to be able to kiss each other in public without getting arrested?". All of these questions were personal questions that everybody was wondering after the two had won their battle for marriage. I think that this image would be awesome to borrow to show their expressions and their concerns after winning, what would soon be known as, a country wide, and life changing, court case.

Exhibit Item 3: Real Image of the Loving's kissing

This image is a real picture that was taken during a photoshoot, by Villet, for the March 18, 1966 edition, for Life/ Time magazine. I would love to borrow this image because the fact that the picture were taken a year before they won case, is daring alone. These pictures were taken, knowing that if they were to be seen by some people, that they could be arresting. That alone is daring, and shows the relation between the picture, and the daring behaviors by the Lovings. The two did not let anything separate them, and that is why I love this image. It not only shows the love that the two have for each other but the daring, and the powerful behaviors that come from this image and the date the image was taken. This image shows the impact and the laws that these two had to overcome at this time in history.

Exhibit Item 4: A Copied Image of the letter that Mildred wrote to General Attorney Kennedy

This image is a photo copy of the original letter that Mildred wrote to General Attorney Kennedy. This is the letter that raised awareness to the ACLU, that eventually lead to the court case. Mildred wrote this letter on her own because she was so upset about how her and her husband were being treated. I would love to exhibit this image because if she did not write this letter, the ACLU would have never figured out what Virginia was doing to them. And if the ACLU never figured about this letter, than the supreme court would have never figured out about their case, and then the two would have had to live outside of Virginia for 25 years or go to prison for 1 year. This letter shows how this couple became the icon for legal interracial marriages.

Exhibit Item 5: An Image of Richard and Mildred Loving's Marriage License

This image shows the Loving's Marriage License. This license is extremely important because this sheet of paper is what binds the two together forever. The two loved each other so much, and cared so much for each other, that they got this license not even caring what would happen to them. This license was extremely bold and defined and started the whole trial. I would love to borrow this license to show the importance of the marriage, and how the whole trial started.

Exhibit Item 6: News Clipping from Bridgeport, Connecticut

This screenshot is a zoomed in image of the Bridgeport Post on November 3o, 1966. This was the year before the case was actually dissolved and closed. This news clip is really just letting the town of Bridgeport Connecticut know what is going on and what the couple is going through. I would love to exhibit this news clipping because it shows how popular, well known, and how big of a deal it was, and what the two were going through. It allowed people outside of Virginia to see what Virginia was doing to the couple, and how important it was to the country of America. This case really changed America, and marriage laws for the country.

Exhibit Item 7: Vintage dress from 1960's that Mildred would have worn

These images are of an old vintage dress from the 60's that Mildred would have worn. I think that this dress looks homemade, and a nicer kind of dress that Mildred Loving would have worn to the trial, or maybe a dinner, or nicer event. I would love to include this dress in my exhibit because I think it really shows my guests, and other people what she would have worn, and what her life would have been like. I think that this piece of clothing really connects us today, and Mildred, by witnessing something that she would have worn during her hardships, or after the case, in her happiest moments.

Exhibit Item 8: Image of the Loving's and others sitting on Richard's car

This image is awesome because I figured out that Richard's car was extremely important to the Loving's, especially Richard. This image is a picture of a group of the Loving's and friends, gathered around, sitting in and on his car. I think that this image is awesome for the exhibit because it shows what meant a lot to Richard, and what he took care of, and worked on, for most of his life. It also shows what cars looked like during this time, and what they meant for the people and culture of the 60's and 70's.
